Bio

Mr. Smiley is a one-man band that mixes up folk, human beat boxing, 80’s new wave rhythms, and a dash of Mongolian throat singing all in one huge mountain of a performance. Although the whole show stands on the wobbly legs of his digital loop petal the sound is heartwarming and hand-made. His sound is so thick and engulfing that even the hippest of hipsters drinks it up and booty shakes with wild abandonment. Mr. Smiley’s songs are one part road trip, one part thrift shop record collection, and fifty zillion parts dreamy endless summer soundscape.

In the studio and live, Tony builds his songs one loop at a time. Unlike most loop pedal artists, Tony doesn’t use any pre-recorded loops. First, he lays down a guitar track, beat boxes a drum track, adds bass and then sings, passionate, abstract, emotionally charged lyrics that audiences connect with. With all his loops firing like a well-oiled machine he is free to unleash a barrage of wah pedal funk, crunchy distortion or flurries of fretboard riffs.

Asked who he thought he sounded like, he replied, “Pinback, Helio Sequence and Outkast.” Then he thought for a second and added, “and Tears for Fears.” Someone else at the table said, “Soundgarden, the Talking Heads and the Grateful Dead.” You’ll have to hear him and make up your own mind.

Tony Smiley is an Oregon native and has been playing music for over 20 years. He grew up in Hood River listening to The Police, Motley Crue and Chuck Mangione.

Moving to Portland a few years back, he started developing his own style with the loop station, drawing on the influences of Jeff Buckley, Radio Head, Modest Mouse and the bands mentioned above along with countless other influences.

Tony has played in such Portland venues as Doug Fir, The Fez Ballroom, Berbatis, Alberta St. Public House and Portland Brewfest. In Seattle he’s played the Showbox, Central Tavern,Tommy’s , The Pink Door and many more. Tony recently toured with “Jerry Joseph and The Jack Mormons” in Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and Utah.
